Why are evangelical Christians such a huge group in the USA?

Because many Americans are poorly educated and aren't into religious beliefs and tenets. Therefore, it is likely that there are many evangelists. Those ignorant people prefer to be emotional rather than rational. If those evangelists deep in south knew about the teachings of Christ besides yelling out His name all the time, they wouldn't show such hostility toward others of different faiths.
